Breast Implants

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures perfomed in the United States and around the world. Breast augmentation is ideal for women looking for an increase in their breast cup size, and women after pregnancies looking to restore or enhance their pre-pregnancy breast size.
Women from all over interested in breast augmentation have been seeking the expertise of board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Arnold Breitbart, who has been performing breast augmentation surgery for over 25 years.

Silicone and Saline Breast Implants

Both silicone and saline breast implants are FDA approved today for breast augmentation, although most women today are choosing silicone gel breast implants for breast augmentation. Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water during the breast augmentation procedure. Although unusual, leakage of the implant may occur over time. Should the saline breast implant leak, the implant will deflate and a decrease in breast size would be obvious. Your body will absorb the salt water and it is not dangerous. Replacing the breast implant is generally straightforward, by surgically removing the deflated breast implant and replacing it with a new breast implant.
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel, which has a soft “gummy bear” consistency. This gel feels more like natural breast tissue, and for this reason silicone breast implants are more popular among breast augmentation patients today than saline breast implants. With saline breast implants, women are more likely to feel ripples of the breast implant, particularly on the bottom of the breast. This degree of rippling is much less common with silicone breast implants, generally resulting in a smoother, softer feel of breasts with silicone breast implants compared to saline breast implants in breast augmentation. In addition, the leakage rate of silicone breast implants is less than with saline. However, since most silicone breast implant leaks are very small and not apparent to the patient, the FDA recommends breast MRI exams every few years to check the silicone breast implants. If a leak is detected, the breast implant is removed and replaced.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient surgical procedure. Most women return to work in a few days following their breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Breitbart most commonly places the breast implants under the muscle during the breast augmentation. This results in a more natural look, as well as much less incidence of capsular contracture scar tissue forming around the breast implant. Incisions are small and hidden, typically either within the fold under the breast, or at the edge of the areola.
