Men struggle with signs of aging and facial changes the same as women, but their reason for undergoing facial plastic surgery is different. While both genders wish for a younger look, women seek to restore or enhance femininity with softer features, such as round cheeks and wide eyes. Researchers have found that men want more prominent cheekbones and chins with a square jaw. Facial plastic surgery can improve not only your facial shape and your self-confidence, but also the way others view your personality.

Dr. Arnold Breitbart offers various procedures for men to enhance and improve their facial features. Men make up a larger portion of plastic surgery patients now that the stigma around cosmetic improvements is fading.

How Facial Plastic Surgery Improves First Impressions

No matter how cheery, goofy or serious-natured you are in your day-to-day life, your personality traits are judged based on your neutral facial expressions. Someone with a resting appearance that looks angry, tired or sad may find it challenging to overcome these first impressions socially and professionally.

Plastic surgeons at Georgetown University Medical Center performed a research study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery to determine how facial plastic surgery results changed their first impressions with strangers.

In the 2019 study, these doctors took before and after photos of 24 men who underwent upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), lower blepharoplasty (lower eyelid reduction), facelift, neck lift, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) and chin augmentation. They showed these photos to over 150 participants ages 25 to 34 with college degrees. Researchers told no one of the study’s purpose, and participants rated each patient’s personality traits based on their respective photos for attractiveness, masculinity and personality characteristics, such as aggressiveness, likeability, trustworthiness, extroversion and risk-seeking.

Doctors found these changes in perception of the male patients after facial plastic surgery:

  • Patients with upper eyelid surgery were perceived as more trustworthy and likable.
  • Those who had lower blepharoplasty were seen as less risk-taking.
  • Nose surgery patients were seen as more attractive.
  • Patients with a brow lift saw a spike in risk-taking and extroversion traits.
  • Participants rated facelift patients with more likability and trustworthiness.
  • Neck lift patients gave off a more masculine and extroverted impression.

Different facial areas contribute to your perceived personality, which may be why many men choose these procedures to improve their social and work lives. After all, the face is the mirror of the soul, and you only get one chance at a first impression.
